“And what is as important as knowledge?” asked the mind.
“Caring and seeing with the heart,” answered the soul.

Bio
My name is Joy and I have been an educator, a corporate leader, a consultant, a small business owner, an artist, and a writer. I have a master’s degree in education K-12. In 17 years of teaching, mostly K-5th grade, I received Early Childhood Certification and National Board for Professional Teaching Standards Certification recognized as the gold standard in teacher certification. The National Board was in 1997, and at the time, I was one of only about 600 teachers in the country with this distinction being honored with a gala at the White House given by former President Bill Clinton. Today, 133,000 + teachers have achieved National Board Certification.
I then took a pause to raise a family, and I opened a small educational business called Pencil Tips to offer resources and support educators and homeschool parents. However, life took a bit of an unexpected turn, and I was offered a position as a Major Gift Officer for a large corporate healthcare organization. This opportunity was a once in a lifetime event I felt honored to be part of, so I closed my small business to pursue this new journey. In that time, I was part of major projects such as building a new hospital, breast care center, and hospice residence along with many smaller projects which were part of my development efforts such as getting helmets on underserved kids for recreational activities. I was able to impact my community and state through philanthropy raising over $50 million over the course of 22 years.
During that time, I also went into business opening a wooden puzzle manufacturing company. My love for art led me in this direction where I could paint and design puzzles to my heart’s content “in my spare time.” This was quite a successful endeavor nationally and internationally, and I am proud of the products that evolved from it. The manufacturing part was challenging, and it took me away from the creative end, so I closed after 8 years to concentrate on my love of watercolor and finishing many books I have started over the years. However, as a teacher at heart, one of my desires has always been to share my love of knowledge and ideas with others.
It is a way of life to continue learning, growing, and changing over and over in various ways. Pencil Tips 2.0 is full of creative, imaginative activities I used in my own classroom for years and with my own children as they were growing up. It feels good to share ideas, bring back to life old ones and package it with love and enthusiasm as if it were brand new. To many, an activity or idea might be something new (an aha moment), it might be an enlightened moment, a cool idea forgotten about, a quick needed activity or it might be familiar but structured in a different way.
